Max Zirngast graduated in philosophy from the University of Vienna in 2011. He consequently studied philosophy and political science in Vienna and Ankara and works as an independent writer and translator. He writes in German, English and Turkish for Jacobin Magazine, Re:volt Magazine and elyazmalari.com among others on Turkey, the Middle East and many more issues.
In September 2018 he was detained and subsequently imprisoned in Turkey on trumped up “terrorism” charges. After 3 months in prison he was released but banned from leaving Turkey, eventually being acquitted from all charges in September 2019. The international solidarity campaign, urging for his freedom, published a book with many of his writings over the course of the last years and also from prison and the writings of others related to the whole process entitled “Die Türkei am Scheideweg” (Turkey at the Crossroads).
