Jan Juul Christensen has been general secretary of the party since 2016.
Mr. Christensen holds a master in social sciences (cand.scient.soc) from Roskilde University (RUC) in 1994.
He has long experience in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and his activities include both consultant in AOF (the labour movement’s educational organization), editor of oppinion at the labour movement’s newspaper Aktuelt, journalist in SDP’s news service, head of communication for the SDP (2000-2003) and Head of Campaign for the former prime minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen in the European Parliamentary Election in 2004.
After the campaign in 2004, Mr. Christensen went to work in the private sector joining a communication agency and later on, he became Head of communication and political department of KODA, which is a non-profit collective rights management society that administers Danish and international copyrights for music creators and publishers, when their music is performed in public.
In 2008 Mr. Christensen established as a partner the Danish office of Rud Pedersen – one of the largest Nordic consultancies specializing in the field of public affairs.
In 2016 Mr. Christensen was appointed General Secretary by the party leadership and subsequently confirmed by the ordinary party congress as one of the four persons making up the elected leadership of the Social Democratic Party (together with the party leader Mette Frederiksen and two deputies).
Mr. Christensen also has experience as a politician himself, as he was elected for the city council in his home town Greve from 1990-1998.
